FAQ
Does it cost the employer anything extra to offer the Taxsaver scheme?
No. Employers actually save on employer PRSI contributions because the ticket value is exempt from PRSI.
How does an employer set up the scheme?
Employers set up an account with Irish Rail or Bus Éireann and place orders directly. Once the account is active, log in details will be sent to the designated person (s) who will be placing orders
Can an employer buy Taxsaver tickets for contractors or agency staff?
Generally no — only direct employees are eligible. Contractors or agency staff should check with their agency/employer to confirm.
What happens if an employee leaves or is dismissed while the ticket is still valid?
It depends on the arrangement agreed. Employers may allow the employee to keep the ticket or request its return. Refunds can only be processed by the employer through the operator.
Are there any fixed dates for tickets?
- Monthly tickets are valid for one calendar month.
- Annual tickets are valid for one year starting from the first day of any month.
Is salary sacrifice the only way to provide a Taxsaver ticket?
No. Employers can also provide a Taxsaver ticket in lieu of a bonus (for example, a Christmas bonus). Because it is tax-free, the ticket offers greater value than cash.
What savings do employers get from offering the scheme?
In addition to helping employees save on travel costs, employers save on PRSI as the value of the ticket is exempt from employer PRSI.
